Since its inception, DATA 498A has been both a capstone and a machine learning course, and it has been the intention of the Math Department to separate out those two aspects into different courses. As of 2024, a new Machine Learning course has been added to the catalog: DATA 474.
Students entering the SDS program in Summer/Fall 2024 or later will be required to take BOTH DATA 474 and DATA 498A. Both courses are in the major requirements for this new catalog.
Students who entered the SDS program prior to Summer/Fall 2024 only need ONE of these courses. We want students' transcripts to show that you will have had a machine learning course, so we are beginning a transition in Spring 2025: we will enroll you in the new course - DATA 474, Statistical Machine Learning - and will substitute this for DATA 498A in your requirements
Graduating students will have top priority to be added to DATA 474. If there are additional seats once the graduating students have been accommodated, these will be released for other students to enroll.
