7.8. Can I repeat a class?

As of Fall 2025, the rules for repeating courses have changed. The full policy is available in the catalog here: https://catalog.arizona.edu/policy/courses-credit/grading/course-repeat
and the Registrar's website contains some helpful explanation:
https://registrar.arizona.edu/records-enrollment/enrollment/repeating-course-grading-repeated-courses

A few highlights:

  • If an A or B was earned in the course previously, it may NOT be repeated.
  • Students are allowed up to three attempts, assuming there is seat availability. However, if a student has already passed a course, they may only receive federal financial aid and institutional grants for up to one additional attempt of that same course.
  • There is no longer a need to file a GRO when repeating a course; beginning with Fall 2025 course enrollments, the GPA will only include the highest grade from among the repeat attempts. This does NOT apply retroactively to repeats that are already completed prior to Fall 2025, sorry.

Note that while Incomplete (I) and Missing Grade (MG) grades are listed as potentially repeatable, this actually depends on what the final grade in the course turns out to be.

Additional details on financial aid rules for course repeats are found here: https://financialaid.arizona.edu/policies/repeat-coursework

Students hoping to enroll in a fourth attempt at a course must contact the offering department to request permission for an additional attempt. Permission may or may not be granted.
